HOW
TO APPEAL YOUR PROPERTY ASSESSMENT:
Revised
Assessment notices are sent out the end of August by
the Supervisor of Assessments Office. Assessments changed
by the Assessor will warrant a notice, except in the quadrennial
year, when everyone receives a notice. The notice is usually
a large postcard showing your prior assessment and the
new revised assessment. Printed on the notice is a date
when all of the assessment revisions are published in your
local newspaper. Please take the time to carefully read
this notice.
The
assessment should be one-third of the estimated market
value. If you believe your property is worth less than
the assessor's estimate, you should contact our office.
We will be glad to meet with you and explain how we arrived
at your value. You should request your property record
card and review it for any errors. If an error is found,
it can easily be corrected at this time. You can also
request to look at current sales and assessments in your
neighborhood and use these for comparison. If after meeting
with the Assessor, and researching sales and assessments,
you still feel your property is overvalued, you have
the right to appeal your assessment with the Will County
Board of Review. This must be done within (30) days after
publication of reassessments. Forms can be obtained at
the Board of Review Office at the Will County Office
Building or at our office.
Remember, when you receive this postcard it is notice
that your assessment is being changed. If you feel
your property is over assessed, this is the time to appeal,
not when you receive your tax bill.
